Filly’s Luck: Planning for your Pet

Share this post on:

Filly is a Shetland Sheepdog, or Sheltie as people often call them. Filly’s human mom Bonnie got her when she was a baby about four years ago.

It was just Filly and Bonnie in the condo where they lived, although Bonnie was super popular around the condo community. They had lots of friends.

Over the course of a year or so, Bonnie started showing subtle signs of cognitive decline. It was nothing too severe, and everyone went about their business as usual.

Flash forward several months, Bonnie began to decline more rapidly. Sparing you all the details and summarizing the story quite a bit here, she was showing severe signs of dementia and it was apparent she was losing touch with reality. It was so bad that one day an ambulance was called to check on her. She was examined and unfortunately, within the next week or so, she wound up in a “memory care” facility.

On that first day when she was taken away, Filly was home too. And her mom was all of a sudden gone. What happens in a situation like this? Do you have your pet covered if something like this were to happen?

Filly is probably one of the luckiest dogs around. The next door neighbor took Filly for the short term. Short term turned into long term, and Filly is living safely and happily with the neighbor.

It was Filly’s luck that things worked out this way. It was luck, and the extreme kindness and compassion of the next door neighbor. Had he not been around, I shudder to think what would have happened in the short term period when nobody was home, and the long term with her human caretaker all of a sudden gone.

As much as Filly’s mom loved her, she did not have a plan for her. Do you have a plan for your pet, should something happen to you?

Contact me with questions, and please, return the devotion your pet has for you, by making sure he or she is covered.
